A bike adventure

Our hotel was about a mile from the center of Red Lodge so we decided to bike into town and look around. We found a spot to lock the bikes and had a lovely time. When we were ready to head back to the hotel we could not get the bikes unlocked. We had the right combination (it hasn't changed in years), but the lock would not release. While Jim tried to work on it, Sam and I walked to the police station to see if they had a bolt cutter. There wasn't anyone there so we called the non-emergency number. The woman at dispatch was very nice, but let us know that they do no do lock-outs. She suggested the TruValue Hardware in town. That was our next stop. The guys there loaned us a bolt cutter.  It took some work, but success!

We returned the bolt cutters, left a Thank You note, and bought a new lock!

Peter Toth carved Indian Head

A carving by the sculptor, Peter Toth. There are Indian heads all over the US. There is at least one in each state. We have seen many and taken pictures of a few. Most recently in the Great Smoky Mountains in 2019.

Red Lodge, Montana

A long haul today, but we made it to Red Lodge. It's a funky little town on the north side of the Beartooth Pass. (That's on the agenda for tomorrow.) We wandered around town and enjoyed the shops. This was an old movie theater turned candy shop. We got a variety of flavors of taffy including huckleberry!

Only in Montana

This was on the road from Snowbowl back into town.

Snowbowl Ski Resort, Missoula, Montana

We ended up in Missoula and decided to take a ride up to the ski mountain. It was fun to see a place that has 2 double chair lifts and has not changed since the 1960's! They had never seen a rope tow or a chair without a safety bar. That said- there were a lot of black runs and some serious vertical!
The girls liked the names of the runs.

Welcome to Montana!

Lolo Pass

This was part of the Lewis and Clark trail. We've been this way several times and are still awed by the tenacity of the first explorers! It would have been a long hard road back then. We stopped at the top for a picnic.

We decided to try out the bench on the nature trail.

It was a nice spot for a picnic.

He thought so too. We had to fight them off to keep our lunch!

Jim was trying to reason with him!

Hiking bridge

A serious bridge for a small hiking trail. There were several along the road. We had to go explore.

River Stop along Hwy 12

A nice spot to test the water and have a snack.

Hwy 12, Idaho

The right road, but the wrong vehicle! This road is meant for a motorcycle. We will still enjoy it in Silver...

Stacey Cakes, McCall, Idaho

Everything looked and smelled amazing! We settled on a few different kinds of cookies.
It could be my favorite stop on the trip!

On the way to dinner

Because we had not done enough today, we decided to bike into town for dinner. (about 1 1/4 miles). We saw a lot of deer along the way!

Portage

Exhausted, but they loved it!

Kayaker's View

The girls took a phone (in a dry bag) on the boat.

Kayaking on Lake Payette

This has been on the girls' trip bucket list for a while. This seemed like a great place to kayak. It was great to watch them figure out how to work together and paddle so they could explore the lake. The weather was pretty nice, but the water was cold so Jim and I opted to enjoy the view from the shore.

Ice Cream Alley

Ali was very excited to have her own ice cream spot! It was some of the best we have had on the trip!

Bike ride in the park

We went for a ride in the park. It's got some climbs, but also some fun downhills.
Trail-block! Too big to ride over so we had to portage.

Observation Point

The end of the peninsula and the highest point in the park. It was a beautiful view!

This is the Ali face every time I take a photo!

Ponderosa State Park

It's a small state park that sits on the peninsula that goes into the lake. There are biking trails and beaches in the ponderosa forest.

Wooley Boardwalk Bike Path

This is a part of the bike path system that goes around and through McCall!

Sand Pictures

Instead of waiting around while they worked on Silver, we went for a ride. We ended up at Davis beach- a small secluded spot on the lake. (We made a wrong turn and ended up in a nice woman's driveway. She told us how to get to the beach. We never would have found it without directions!) The girls made sand pictures. It's fun to see how they can entertain themselves with a stick and some sand!

They were also playing with the camera! (Only 1 kid with 2 feet)

Can you tell that they miss the rabbits?

Beach graffiti!

Silver goes to the doctor.

The tire pressure sensor went off as we came into town yesterday so we took silver to the Less Schwab Tire Center. No problem fixing the tire so we dropped it off this morning, unloaded the bikes, and went for a ride. The best part? When we picked it up a few hours later they fixed the leak and no charge! We plan to get them some treats and drop them by before we leave town tomorrow!

McCall, Idaho

The weather was variable all day, but improved a bit as we moved west. We hope we are out of the storm, though we doubt there will be as much snow at this elevation (~ 5,500 feet).
Payette Lake

We are not sure what it is, but we like it!

This is a sundial. You stand on the month and your shadow shows the time. The girls were not very impressed that I knew what it was. Another family who was looking around was! Just to prove to the girls that it works, we will go back tomorrow.

Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho

Yes, it's June 17th! We were shocked to see so much snow on the road and flurries coming down!

Deeper snow than the last time we were here!

Snow means another snowball fight!
